Thermal paperis aspecial fine paperthat is coated with a chemical (previously often containing BPA) that changes color when exposed to heat. It is used inthermal printersand particularly in inexpensive or lightweight devices such asadding machines, cash registers, andcredit card terminals.

The surface of the paper is coated with a solid-state mixture of a dye and a suitable matrix; a combination of afluoranleuco dyeas an example. When the matrix is heated above its melting point, the dye reacts with the acid, shifts to its colored form, and the changed form is then conserved in a metastable state when the matrix solidifies back quickly enough. The reactant acid in thermal paper is oftenbisphenol A (BPA).

Usually, the coating will turn black when heated, but coatings that turn blue or red are sometimes used. While an open heat source, such as a flame, can discolor the paper, a fingernail swiped quickly across the paper will also generate enough heat from friction to produce a mark.

3 basic roll dimension you need to know and how to perform the basic checking. By knowing how to measure the paper roll size, you are ensuring that you have communicated your requirements correctly and that you are getting what you have paid for. For example, if the price comes across as unbelievably cheap, it might not be in the roll diameter or roll length that you have asked for. (Good things doesn't come cheap!)
1. Roll Width

Place the roll on a flat surface. Using a ruler, measure the roll width from side to side. The most common widths for credit card receipt rolls are 57mm width and Point of Sale (POS) receipt rolls are 80mm width. However, it is quite common to find roll width which is 1mm smaller. This is an industry acceptable tolerance as it allows the paper roll to fit in properly into the printer's paper roll compartment. If the roll width is smaller by more than 2mm, you may want to check with your paper roll supplier as small discrepancies in widths may result in missing prints on the receipts.

2. Roll Diameter

This is measured from edge to edge of the round surface across the center hole, core standing upright. As with roll width, a tolerance of +/- 1mm is also acceptable for roll diameter. Roll diameter is one of the crucial factors which affect the paper roll price (Psst...this is a hint!) as it dictates how much paper goes into the roll. Alternatively, there are some who prefers to specify the roll length instead of the roll diameter.

3. Core Size

Core Inner Diameter (I.D.) -- This is referring to the core inner dimension, which measures only the size of the inner hole.
